Freestyle tutors available for part-day, full day or weekend for your groupbooking:
Sussanne Morton
Sussanne has been teaching Acrylic and Oil painting for the past ten years. Her work is held in private and public collections throughout Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and interstate. More recently Sussanne’s floral portraits have been selling to private collectors in Denmark.
Sussanne specialises in both representational and contemporary abstract art. Her subject matter ranges from landscapes, flowers, and underwater scenes to abstract expressionism.
Her realistic paintings are a snapshot of something natural and beautiful, often embellished ‘larger than life’, creating a wonderful visual impact. Things of nature are portrayed on her canvas, such as flowers, leaves, still – life, landscapes, underwater scenes or close up views of an organic form.
Executed in either oils or acrylics or both, Sussanne’s abstracts are mostly unplanned; Influenced by her surroundings, they are simply an expression of an idea, or inspiration, and coloured with emotion.
She revels in the sense freedom in the creation of an abstract. There are no limitations as such and she is not bound to explain each piece. They are open to interpretation and speak the audience of their own accord.
Terry Bouton: 'The Oil Portrait Oils'

Participants will produce a number of small sketches and an oil portrait painting.
As a warm up we will draw a series of quick faces to examine the elements of proportion and the viewpoints possible in portraiture. Over a cup of tea we will discuss the proportions and compositions found in a number of well known portraits. After some initial planning we will begin our own portrait painting using some of the following techniques: grisaille, under painting, alla prima, glazing and other techniques common to oil painting.
Demonstrations will be given throughout the workshop and participants will produce their own portrait.
Penelope Gilbert-NG
'People'

Penelope believes a good portrait not only captures a physical likeness; it must have the feel of that person’s personality as well.
'Landscapes'

Penelope is an experienced workshop teacher in drawing, painting with oils, pastels and water colours.

Cernak: 'Landscape/Country as Metaphor'

Cernak is from a non-Indigenous first generation migrant background, born in the Glass House Bay region (Moreton Bay) who has already lived and worked through three major art periods in Modernism, Post-Modernism and the eclecticism we refer to as “Contemporary”.
When you work with her through two days of exploring the metaphor of the landscape/country as body/Earth, your painting expression will open inwards and outwards into realms you had simply not imagined. And you will have reached this pathway yourself. It will be unique. And it, like you, your painting will have a real sense of belonging.

Kate French: Sculpture
Clay & tools supplied

During the course we hand build the carcass of the sculpture, proportion the basic shape, model facial features, hair, clothing, position the sculpture into a posture that reflects its subject character and finally texture the sculpture to bring it up to a beautiful finish. You can expect to take a sculpture home at the end of the two days that is ready for drying and firing, plus the skills you will need to modify this technique for any hand building project. The course is packed full of simple, informative and easy demonstrations. You will need to bring a camera, notebook, a big cushion or beanbag to carry your work home on and some photos to use as a reference.
Noel Miller 'Painting from the Ground'

Recommended: For painters with some experience
Participants will use found ochres and natural pigments, mixing their own paints and learning to discern and mix colour. All styles from traditional to abstract will enjoy learning to use these traditional materials, as well as learning to paint in the wet-on-wet method. We will paint en plein air and take the opportunity to apply paint directly to the surface without using drawing/drafting marks. Although ochres and pigments will be the main media used, participants will be encouraged to use a variety of media in their work. There will be an emphasis on experimentation in use of media and construction of the work.
The first half day, we will prepare cartoons on paper that we will then translate into a series of canvasses. Participants will finish at least two canvasses in the two days.
"This is not a workshop for the obsessive compulsive person needing to go into great detail. Be prepared to move outside the square. Be prepared to possibly be challenged. Come along ready to paint physically and be exhausted at the end of the day. On the final day, I will ask every participant to work on a large scale work that they complete that day."
Some time at the workshop will be set aside to compare art practices or talk with beginners about building a body of work and finding a space to exhibit.
Dianne Cannon: 'Indoor/Outdoor Large Clay Sculptures'
Clay & tools supplied

In my workshops I teach people the form to make large sculptures approx. 2-3 blocks of clay. All sculptures are hollow and after firing can be put inside or outside. You do not need to have any experience at all to do my workshop as the form I teach is very simple and I take you through every step. All students I have taught have all been amazed at the work they have produced at the end of the workshop and all feel very inspired to continue to play with clay. All my students sign up many times to come back as a strong bond forms in the workshops with lots of networking. All sculptures are approx. 75cm high. To see some of my work go to my website. I love inspiring people to find the artist within, teaching people to sculpt is a passion, I love it.
Leigh Camilleri 'The Process of Drawing'
Charcoal, pencils & canvas supplied

This workshop is a dry medium drawing workshop focusing on still life as a starting point. I will be encouraging participants to push their own personal working styles while using processes that will concentrate on space, composition and colour. At the end of each day a group review will be held to support and encourage personal ways of working. I teach by demonstration and encourage group involvement. With a view to rigorous observation is just the beginning of the process of inspiration.

Testimonial
Hello Martin
Thank you for the memorable art day my daughter Jane and I spent at “Freestyle Escape”.
My experience was so far beyond my expectation. The venue is breathtaking and sitting down to the delicious lunch with the teachers and others was most enjoyable.
I didn’t believe I would come home after a one day lesson with a charcoal portrait when the best I have ever achieved is a stick man or two circles with ears resembling a cat. I am so proud of my charcoal I am framing it.
Jane’s schulpture is sitting in pride of place in the living room and every visitor to our home has put in an order for one.
We assure our visitors that they too should partake in a Freestyle Escape Art experience and come away with their own creations….it is so fulfilling.
Warm regards
Bronwyn Tobin
